Kleine Matterhorn-Views of Matterhorn, ice caves and glacier, hike down

The second day in Zermatt we took lifts up to the top of Kleine Matterhorn. It was a perfect day for the trip, clear and hot. Let’s go up!  It took three trams to reach the top, the first two ending in Alps villages, the last ending at the top of Kleine Matterhorn a place of snow, glaciers and rock.  Through a tunnel and up an elevator was the top of Kleine Matterhorn, ahead was the glacier.  We chose the sun, the view and the snow first.  There were great and views into Italy and the Mattherhorn, but it looked much smaller from this high.  Across the glacier were ice caves, carved into the ice, with exhibits about glaciers, ice carvings and such.  We headed back to the tunnel, up the elevator and out to the viewing platform on Kleine Matterhorn, with more astonishing views.

This was a more touristy day than some we had done, and there were some “characters” around. One 60-year-old guy with dyed blond hair and an African woman crawling all over each other, doing some heavy petting all the way up and down the trams.  Then going down, a flashy and very loud Taiwanese guy, strutting around the tram like a rooster, laughing jovially in his designer clothes and leather jacket.

On the way down we got off at the second to the last tram station, and hike down. Another beautiful hike from the alps down to the rural land surrounding Zermatt and into Zermatt.   Helicopters were flying overhead the entire time, hauling buckets of concrete up to a tower under construction, a new lift was to open that fall.
